Australia to allow vehicle to grid installations in 2025

On November 9, 2024, Federal energy and climate minister Chris Bowen announced agreement on new electrical standards allowing EV owners to use vehicle to grid (V2G) technology in 2025.

In a speech at an EV conference in Sydney the minister announced that Standards Australia has approved the new standard enabling vehicle to grid charging in Australia.

This means that if you own a car with V2G capability and a bidirectional device, you could be using that car to store and supply power to your house in 2025.

Minister Bowen said the Standards Australia approval means car companies can start having their bidirectional devices tested to the revised standard, then apply to the Clean Energy Council to have their devices assessed and listed.

Once the vehicle system is listed, distribution networks can then confirm that the EV can be connected to their local infrastructure.

From 2025 the buying decision for an EV will include thinking of the car also functioning as a household battery.
